The Council gathered in the center of the village, standing on a hastily erected platform.

“We must attack,” someone shouted from the enormous crowd. My attention was drawn to Abskin. He snarled, not unexpected, as the duskhorde had killed his mate three cycles ago. “Before they murder our precious females!”

Kunde and Fretz, my old childhood friends, stood beside him. I wanted to be there with them, discussing what we’d do like we’d done when we ran around as younglings together, but I was needed on the platform.

My gaze met theirs, one by one, and they nodded, showing me their support.

Dragging my gaze away from them, I sought Josie, the most precious female of all, but as if she sensed me looking, she directed her gaze downward like she had when she rode on the trundier with Savvy. She stood beside her daughter on the edge of the platform.

“It is time,” Abskin yelled. “They have attacked us too often. They murdered my mate. They stole Josie.” He elbowed Fretz. “It will be your female next.”

“They will burn us in our beds at night,” another male cried. “We must kill them all.”

“No,” Josie said, stepping forward.

A murmur rippled through the crowd, but everyone went silent, either from shock or because they truly wished to hear what she had to say.

She walked across the platform to stand beside Narcial, her shoes dull thuds on the wood. She’d changed from my tunic into her own clothing, and for one munette, I wished we were back in the Osten valley, bathing together. The duskhorde had been after us, but we were one.

Now I wasn’t sure we’d ever be able to be together.

Who didn’t want me to forget Yadeen?

Narcial nodded, giving Josie permission to speak. Savvy stood to the side, gazing at her mother with admiration.

“We can’t kill them all,” Josie said.

“We must,” someone yelled.

Narcial frowned and lifted a finger, pointing at the male, making his gaze fall away.

She caught my eye, and her solid brow ridge rose. Her tail swished behind her, showing she was not upset by Josie’s words but with those who refused to listen.

“We must kill them,” another male voice cried. “You know they would do this to us.”

Josie lifted her hands, asking for silence. “I understand. Believe me. They took me and would’ve mated me to their king if we hadn’t escaped. I want them disarmed and unable to harm us as much as all of you. But we can’t do this. First, their numbers are as great as ours, and they’re almost all warriors. Only six dusklen females survived the disease.”

“A Ferlaern can kill dozens of them himself.” Skydar’s voice bit through the enraged murmurs. “If their number equals ours, it will be an easy match.”

In many ways, he’d matured.

In others, not enough.

“And what if some of you die?” Josie asked.

“It is the price we must pay,” Skydar said. He stood on the platform beside Bruge, Durran, Garek, and the fourth warlord, the oldest of them all, my grandfather. He placed his palm on my uncle’s shoulder.
